There is something extra special about celebrating a baby’s first birthday! One whole year of growing, learning, changing, and developing the sweetest little personality deserves to be documented.
For this adorable first birthday photography session, we created a soft purple and lavender setup with balloons, a modern rainbow backdrop, and plenty of simple details that kept all the attention on the birthday girl. And that smile? She absolutely brought it!
As an Edwardsville first birthday photographer, one of my favorite parts of these sessions is capturing more than just the cake. Before the mess begins, we take time for traditional milestone portraits so parents have beautiful photographs that really show what their little one looked like at this age.

First Birthday Portraits Before the Cake
Before bringing out the birthday cake, we captured several portraits of this sweet girl in her lavender dress. She gave us the BEST smiles!
At one year old, babies are full of personality. Some are crawling, some are standing, some are taking their first steps, and others are perfectly happy sitting and showing off those brand-new little teeth.
These simple portraits are an important part of a first birthday session because they create timeless images parents can display long after the first birthday decorations are gone.

Time for the Cake Smash!
Then it was time to get messy!
Her purple “one” outfit coordinated perfectly with the lavender birthday setup, and once the cake came out, she was ready to celebrate. Those frosting-covered hands and huge smiles are exactly why I love photographing first birthday cake smash sessions.
Every baby reacts differently to their cake. Some dive right in, some carefully investigate it, and some want absolutely nothing to do with it! That unpredictability is part of what makes each cake smash session so much fun.
And this little girl definitely gave us some adorable cake-smashing moments!
